7 Unique Cotswold Experiences

The Cotswolds are often celebrated for their picture-perfect villages and rolling countryside, but rather than simply seeing this region, how about experiencing it?

At Active England, we believe travel should be more than ticking off sights; it should be about connection, movement, and those unforgettable โ€œyou had to be thereโ€ moments.

The Cotswolds are a region shaped by tradition, nature, and craftsmanship and the best way to understand it is to get involved.

From hands-on rural pursuits to exclusive access behind closed doors, these experiences invite you to see the Cotswolds differently. Whether youโ€™re walking through ancient landscapes, meeting passionate local experts, or trying something completely new, this is the Cotswolds as we love to share.

Here are seven of unique experiences in the Cotswolds.

1. Picnic with a View

A countryside picnic might sound like a simple Cotswold experience, but within the ruins of Sudeley Castle, it becomes something truly extraordinary.

After exploring the castle grounds and gardens, youโ€™re led somewhere a little unexpected, into a private setting tucked within the ancient stone walls themselves.

The setting is bespoke, soft rugs layered underfoot, cushions scattered for comfort, and those thoughtful little touches like softly glowing fairy lights that make everything feel atmospheric.

Surrounded by centuries-old stone, this is something intimate and not something you can arrange after stumbling across it on Google, or ChatGPT, for that matter.

Then thereโ€™s the food. Everything has been sourced with a great deal of care. From the best local produce, artisan Cotswold cheese, freshly baked bread and seasonal delicacies to something perfectly chilled to drink.

And with one of our extraordinary local guides there, the stories keep flowing too. The royal history of Sudeley, the story of the creamery that made the cheese and the plant flowering nearby.

2. Behind the Scenes at Englandโ€™s Finest Stately Home

From its grand Baroque architecture to the sweeping parkland designed by Capability Brown, itโ€™s no wonder that Blenheim Palace is seen as Englandโ€™s finest Stately home.

Visiting this palace on the edge of the Cotswolds, walking the rooms of its grand interior and striding through the parkland can only bring you so close to what makes this location so special.

This behind-the-scenes experience takes you beyond the public spaces and into the private workings of the palace.

Led by an expert guide, youโ€™ll explore areas rarely seen by visitors, uncovering the human side of this extraordinary estate. From the Dukes of Marlborough to the teams who quietly keep everything on this 18th-century estate running three hundred years later.

Itโ€™s these hidden details we love sharing. The tucked-away corridors, the lesser-known rooms, the stories that bring the palace to life. Youโ€™ll gain a deeper understanding of how Blenheim isnโ€™t just preserved, of how itโ€™s lived in, how itโ€™s cared for, and how it is constantly evolving.

3. Come-by! Marvel at the Speed and Control of an English Sheepdog

In the Northern Cotswolds, near the rolling fields around Guiting Power, is an experience that draws you in from the first whistle.

Standing in an open field, youโ€™ll watch as a highly trained sheepdog responds instantly to a series of calls, whistles and commands from their handler, guiding a flock of sheep with incredible precision and speed. The connection between handler and dog is effortless, almost unspoken, and rooted in generations of rural tradition โ€“ fascinating to see up close.

And then comes the fun part, you donโ€™t just watch. With a bit of guidance, youโ€™ll have the chance to step in and try it yourself. Itโ€™s harder than it looks (a lot harder), but thatโ€™s all part of it. Thereโ€™s plenty of laughter along the way, and a real appreciation builds for just how skilled these dogs are.

We love this experience because itโ€™s real โ€“ a genuine slice of working Cotswold life.

4. After Hours at Hidcote Gardens

Hidcote is one of Englandโ€™s most well-loved gardens, let alone those cherished gardens of the Cotswolds.

But the real magic of Hidcote really begins when everyone else leaves. As the gates close and the evening Cotswold light draws in, the character of the whole place changes โ€“ itโ€™s now quieter and more atmospheric. This place is now yours to explore.

We love this moment. Wandering through Hidcoteโ€™s famous โ€œoutdoor roomsโ€ without the daytime crowds, you start to notice everything: the planting structure, the textures, the scent in the air. American-born, British horticulturalist Lawrence Johnston designed each space to have its own personality, and in this after-hours experience, you get to see these places in a way very few do.

5. Seasonal Foraging

If you know where to look, the Cotswolds are full of flavour, and this is one of our favourite ways to discover it.

With an expert guide, youโ€™ll head off the beaten path into woodlands, hedgerows, and open meadows, learning how to spot whatโ€™s edible and perhaps more importantly, whatโ€™s not!-

One minute youโ€™re brushing past wild herbs, the next youโ€™re tasting something youโ€™ve just picked yourself. Depending on the season, that might be wild garlic, elderflower, berries, or even mushrooms tucked away in the undergrowth.

What we love most about this experience is how it changes the way you see the landscape. Plant blindness or plant awareness disparity is something that many of us can attest to โ€“ and rather than swiping through images on your phone, foraging is not only a fascinating way to learn, but itโ€™s often very tasty too!

6. Up Close with Mighty Birds of Prey

This one always gives people goosebumps. Youโ€™ll meet hawks, falcons, and owls up close, guided by expert falconers who bring centuries-old traditions to life.

And this isnโ€™t just watching from the sidelines, youโ€™ll feel the weight of a hawk landing on your gloved hand, watch it take flight, and see that split-second precision as it returns.

Itโ€™s a thrilling experience and completely unforgettable. As with the unique sheepdog experience, thereโ€™s a real appreciation that comes from the care, the training, and the deep respect between handler and bird.

7. Knock-in! Enjoy a Private Polo Lesson

Set against the wide-open backdrop of the Cotswolds countryside, this is your chance to step into a world thatโ€™s often admired from afar but rarely experienced like this. Polo might have a reputation for being exclusive, but with the right introduction (and a bit of spirit), it quickly becomes something you can genuinely get stuck into.

The experience caters for all levels. You can start with the basics, how to hold the mallet, how to position yourself, and how to work with the horse, before building up the confidence to give it a proper go. And yes, that first clean hit? Very satisfying.

Expect a few laughs, a bit of a challenge, and a moment where it all clicks and suddenly, youโ€™re playing polo in the English Cotswolds! What a great travel story.

Weโ€™re big believers that the best travel moments happen when youโ€™re doing, not just seeing. When youโ€™re out in the landscape, meeting the people who know it best, trying something new and coming away with stories that feel personal to you.
