Go Downton with Active England

Tour the locations of the internationally renowned show that has brought a touch of class to TV drama

If you’ve got a soft spot for Lady Mary, or fancy yourself as the next Lord Crawley, this may be just the vacation for you. Active England’s 7-day cycling tour takes you to the real Downton Abbey and allows you to step back to a more refined time.

AWARD-WINNING BRITISH DRAMA

From the moment Downton Abbey first hit our screens back in 2010, it was clearly going to be a huge hit, and the costume drama just keeps going from strength to strength. The much-deserved Golden Globe, Emmy and BAFTA award winner grips us on a weekly basis with emotive story lines, superb cast and stunning locations.

Our Active England tour gives you access to both Highclere Castle – the real Downton Abbey – and the enchanting village of Bampton where many of the external scenes are filmed.

AN ARISTOCRATIC HOME IN A WONDROUS SETTING

You’ll be able to visit the castle where the true Earl of Grantham, the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, and his family reside then get up-close to Downton village life as you walk the familiar streets.

As well as standing in the middle of some 1000 acres of wondrous parkland, Highclere Castle is also located in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The castle itself is instantly recognisable, with its Gothic architecture dominating the skyline.

This famous stately home of the fictional Crawley family has over 50 bedrooms, an impressive library, and ornate state rooms. Guides are on hand during your tour, ready to share the castle’s history with you. And in the cellar, you’ll find an extraordinary collection of Egyptian artefacts gathered by the 5th Earl and his close friend Howard Carter.

DOWNTON VILLAGE

Nearby is another familiar sight – the village of Bampton. The village library is used as the drama’s cottage hospital and the Church of St Mary’s has featured in many episodes. Look out for the former home of Mathew Crawley and the pub, as well as the charming village square. When you’re there why not treat yourself to a spot of afternoon tea and some Downton memorabilia too?

VISITING THE CASTLE

Highclere Castle remains the home of Lord and Lady Carnarvon, which means access is quite restricted. Due to this tours of the castle are extremely limited and in high demand. For a chance to visit this uniquely famous site please let us know as early as possible and we will do our best to book you in on a tour of the house and grounds.

Join us on a 7-day bike tour where Highclere Castle and Bampton are stops on our route and allow us to transport you to the real life locations, Downton Abbey.
