Our Favourite Pubs for a Sunday Roast

A tradition dating back hundreds of years, England is as famous for the Sunday Roast as it is for Fish & Chips on a Friday! To celebrate National Yorkshire Pudding Day, we’ve put together a list of some of our favourite pubs for a Sunday Roast. There is a debate about whether the humble Yorkshire Pudding is served with every type of roast or just with beef, and whether they should be make an appearance at Christmas dinner, but that’s a whole other story. We love our roasts served with plenty of roast potatoes, lots of colourful vegetables, cauliflower cheese and don’t forget the gravy! Let’s not get distracted with details, here are some of our favourite pubs across the length and breadth England for a Sunday roast…

 

The Chequers Inn (Cotswolds)

The pub sits at the heart of the village of Churchill in the Cotswolds – surrounded by beautiful honey-coloured houses, a village green and a historic church. This traditional gastropub offers a relaxed atmosphere (dogs are welcome!), great food and drink, and the perfect setting to while away a Cotswolds afternoon or evening. You can even have a go on the well-used dartboard!

The Mariners, Rock (Cornwall)

The Mariners in Rock has a stunning view across the Camel Estuary. You can catch the ferry here from Padstow, walk along the beach and through the sand dunes, then reward yourself with a pint of beer from the local brewery before tackling your way through their delicious menu focusing on local produce.

The Three Crowns, Chagford (Devon)

This 13th century, part-thatched inn with imposing granite facade is set in the heart of the pretty Dartmoor town of Chagford. Get cosy under a beamed ceiling next to huge inglenook fireplace and enjoy delicious local food. If you feel a bit sleepy after your food, you could even book a room and stay the night!

The Royal Oak, Keswick (Lake District)

The Royal Oak started life as an 18th century coaching inn, and, through the years, has played host to some rather well-known literary figures. From the pub you can walk a circular loop around the beautiful Derwentwater, summiting Catbells for some stunning Lake District views. If you’ve got time, we’d recommend a short detour to the Derwent Pencil Museum – a fascinating insight into the history of the underrated stick of graphite.

The Tankerville Arms, Alnwick (Northumberland)

Nestled in the tranquil village of Eglingham this is a nineteenth century dog-friendly coaching inn.
The menu concentrates on local produce, and might include Glendale lamb, Northumbrian game, fish landed from nearby ports and cheeses from Doddington Dairy. Real ales from Alnwick and Hadrian and Border Breweries complement the traditional range of beers, wine and spirits in the bar.
