The Cotswolds is perfect biking country, taking the quietest roads you will feel transported back into England as it was before mechanisation, where sheep and dry-stone walling were the biggest industries. Relax and enjoy the ride from palaces to country pubs.
Our cycling holidays are designed to be completely relaxing. We pick up guests from Moreton in Marsh, a direct 90 minute train journey from London Paddington, and take you straight into the countryside away from the crowds, through the stunning Cotswolds for a cycling tour to remember. Bike as much or as little as you like each day, our guides can tailor your tour to your preferences, with shorter or longer routes available daily.
We collect you at 9am from Moreton in Marsh train station, a direct 90 minute journey from London Paddington, and cycle straight out into the majestic countryside of the Cotswolds, taking in some of the most well-known towns and villages including Chipping Campden and Broadway Tower where we’ll eat lunch overlooking 13 counties and, on a clear day, with views all the way to Wales. We also visit the stunning Hidcote Gardens, renowned internationally for its series of outdoor rooms, returning to Moreton in Marsh in the evening.
Mileage: 20-40 miles
We cycle out from the hotel through the beautiful Cotswolds to Blenheim Palace, where Winston Churchill was born and a World Heritage Site. The morning’s ride is around 20 miles, through rolling countryside. At Blenheim guests can eat lunch over-looking the Capability Brown parklands and give you ample time to explore the historical palace and walk through some of the 2000 acre estate. We cycle out of the palace in the afternoon with the option to cycle along country lanes all the way to your hotel in Burford, ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’, in the evening. There are options to cycle or take the support vehicle on the way back, perhaps via the pretty country pub at Swinbrook, famous as the home of the Mitford Sisters, along the river Windrush.
Mileage: 20-35 miles
We cycle South out from Burford down quiet lanes and past old manor houses towards Bourton-on-the-Water, known for its beauty and for the stream running through the centre of the village with its multiple stone bridges. We cycle from here in a loop back towards Burford, stopping in Bibury, famous for its terrace of weavers cottages, Arlington Row, pictured inside the cover of British passports. It’s easy to see why William Morris called Bibury ‘The most beautiful village in England’ – with its wonderful stone buildings strung out along the banks of the River Coln. We return in the evening to Burford and your hotel, by bike or support vehicle.
Mileage: 25 miles
From Burford we cycle along a beautifully flat path towards Bampton, winding alongside fields before arriving into the village where the outdoor and village scenes in Downton Abbey were filmed, including St Mary’s Church – renamed St Michael and All Angels in the hit tv show. From here we cycle on to lunch at the quirky Aston Pottery and transfer in the early afternoon into Oxford. Oxford station has frequent departures to London and our guides will say their farewells and help you with any ongoing travel arrangements you have.

Our cycling routes are carefully chosen to ensure we bike on the quietest country lanes, with the best views of the Cotswolds! Drivers in the Cotswolds are very polite, and on our guided trips you will always be with a guide who will lead and look after the group. Our guests have always felt safe and secure when riding with us, check out our Trip Advisor Reviews from guests who have cycled with us: “I was concerned about riding in traffic, but for the most part there were not that many cars. The people are very watchful and careful, they wait and allow cyclist to go ahead. The Cotswolds are very beautiful, rural and unspoiled. I loved the small towns and the beautiful countryside. I would absolutely do it again with Active England. Loved it all.” E.C.
