The tour starts at London Paddington railway station where we pick-up all guests from the clock on Platform 1. We then jump on the bus and travel the one hour to Windsor where we step inside the world of King and Queens and take in everything Windsor has to offer. Packed with regal history at every turn; home to the Queen, the site of Henry VIII’s grave and monarchs since 1066, Windsor is a “must see”. We walk around Windsor Great Park and then straight down the Long Walk into Windsor Castle itself. A maximum 6 miles but most people will walk 3-4 miles for a gentle start to your holiday.
We walk along the wonderful canal route towards the beautifully named Honeystreet, along the towpath through the stunning Wiltshire countryside. We have coffee alongside the canal at Crofton and lunch in the cafe at Honeystreet before setting off, by support vehicle to the World Heritage Site and monument at Stonehenge which is an undoubted highlight of the tour. We then stay overnight in Devizes after a total of between 4-8 miles.
With an early morning option to walk to the wonderful Avebury (think Stonehenge but bigger!), we head off on the Kennet and Avon canal for a wonderful walk alongside the canal, the amazing Caen Flight (22 locks in the space of a mile) alongside the boats, stopping at the pubs and soaking up the atmosphere as the landscape slowly passes by. We then hop in the support vehicle, closer to Bath and walk over the majestic Dundas and Avoncliff aqueducts before finishing the ride for the day at Bathhampton, where we jump in the support vehicle to the Hare and Hounds, nr Tetbury. A total of 3-6 miles (up to 9 should guests want to walk to Avebury).
After a later start and a gentle walk into the National Trust owned Lacock we lunch and visit Lacock Abbey. We then head back to the hotel via Castle Combe, often voted the most beautiful village in England, with the opportunity for guests to have a ½ day to relax, should they want to. Mileage, is from 4-7, depending on preference.
A beautiful flat walk through the South Cotswolds, starting at the beautiful trout stream and river side cafe at Bibury before heading back toward Tetbury and the home of Prince Charles. Visits to the gardens at Highgrove can be organised in advance. We can also visit the National Arboretum at Westonbirt should time allow. Routes from 4-8 miles.
Bath is a stunning walk down an old roman road, right into the centre of this beautiful city via the Kennet and Avon Canal. The Roman Baths, Jane Austen, the Georgian architecture including The Royal Crescent are unmissable. A total walk of 4-8 miles. Guests will be reunited with their luggage for their onward journey.
Guests stay in the best 4* hotels in the Cotswolds region, with unbeatable settings, wonderful accommodation and stunning food – just see Trip Advisor for The Hare and Hounds in Tetbury. Further options are available for those who want to stay in a country cottage location or in a selection of hand-picked bed and breakfasts or pubs.
Our walks differ from almost every other type of walking tour – we call it “walk in walking”. Each day you will be transported close to an iconic point of interest e.g. Oxford and you will be able to literally walk directly into the city. The transfers are free, in the morning and afternoon and allow our guests to immerse themselves in England’s iconic places. Transfers are on average 30 minutes, with no one journey over 45 minutes.
Walk as much or as little as you like as there are options to suit all ages and abilities. Every day guest will be able to shorten the walk if required ensuring guests only need to walk the miles that suit them.
And if you need picking up, then, no problem, we are always on hand to help. A support vehicle is with the guided tours at all times.
Guides are local experts in history, heritage, flora and fauna. They know every gate, stile and pub!
